Balance sheet limits and KPIs for remediation roadmaps

Motivation

Paris Climate Agreement, European Green Deal, National Sustainability Strategy, Climate Protection Plan 2050 and Building Energy Act: The real estate industry is under pressure to contribute to national sustainability goals by 2050. The requirements are high: climate neutral by 2050, economically and socially compatible.

The Climate Protection Plan 2050 sets targets for CO2 emissions by sector, including for the building sector. These targets have an impact on new construction and the building stock of all building types (commercial and residential). It is therefore necessary to develop a system for drawing up long-term, legally compliant renovation roadmaps for existing buildings.

A renovation roadmap defines the measures to be taken to modernise or operate a building or even a property portfolio in the period up to 2050 in such a way that the anticipated legal requirements are met. A renovation roadmap is thus an instrument for long-term investment planning, for creating legal certainty and for internal and external communication.

Research objective

The aim of the project is to identify suitable balance limits and key performance indicators (KPIs) for remediation roadmaps within the framework of current and foreseeable EU and national legislation. For this purpose, the current approaches of different associations and institutions such as DGNB, DENEF, DENA, IREBS etc. will be analysed. Furthermore, European approaches are also included in the analysis. Balance sheet boundaries and KPIs will be chosen in such a way as to be as close as possible to the existing legal framework and the new EU taxonomy for sustainable finance.

On the basis of the research carried out, a decision tree is to be developed with regard to the KPIs and balance limits that are decisive for the climate protection aimed at by 2050. This tree provides a coordinated selection of key and framework parameters on the basis of which renovation roadmaps can be drawn up.
